Turning Real Lives Into Real Impact
When your mission is changing lives, your story has to move people to act.
At StoryTrack, we know that emotion — not information — drives generosity.
The Challenge
For nearly two decades, The Next Step has given scholarships to men and women in recovery programs, empowering them to rebuild their lives through education.
But this year’s gala wasn’t just another milestone — it marked 20 years of transforming lives. The organization wanted to celebrate, to show measurable outcomes — and most importantly, to inspire giving that sustains their mission for years to come.

The Approach
We started with two creative pieces designed to work together:
-
Jamie’s Story (4 minutes): an emotionally raw, personal journey from trauma and addiction to education and hope.
-
20 Years / 20 Voices (2 minutes): a portrait of impact told through the voices of students and alumni who’ve rebuilt their lives through education, recovery, and purpose.
Both pieces were built around four goals that drive every StoryTrack nonprofit campaign:
1. Inspire Emotion Through Story.
The connection comes first. We find the human truth — the lived experience — that makes people care.
2. Build Momentum Through Voices.
Authenticity multiplies belief. When one person says, “It changed my life,” others echo it.
3. Visually Show the Impact.
Real numbers, real progress, real faces. Emotion backed by evidence.
4. Drive Donations.
Every story must lead to action — because inspiration without a next step is just a feeling.
The Story
Jamie grew up in St. Louis, raised by grandparents who loved him fiercely.
When they passed away, he fell into addiction and street life — searching for love “at the end of a bottle, at the end of a needle.”
After years of prison, pain, and loss, he hit a moment of surrender:
“An Epic coach came into my hospital room and said, ‘Ain’t you tired?’
And I just screamed, ‘Yeah.’ Tears started coming down my face.”
That moment changed everything.
Jamie got clean in 2021. He found The Next Step, enrolled in school, and is now working toward a degree in social work and psychology — determined to help others take their next step.
Donors texted the organization before dessert. Guests asked for StoryTrack’s number before they left the ballroom.
Celebrating 20 Years
While Jamie’s story connected the heart, the impact video scaled the message.
“20 Years / 20 Voices” was a chorus of gratitude and growth:
“They believed in me.”
“I finally saw a future.”
“It changed my life.”
Scholarship stats appeared between faces and phrases — 1,000+ awards, $2.8 million funded, 3.5 average GPA — showing the scope behind the emotion.
By pairing an intimate story with a data-driven impact piece, The Next Step met donors both emotionally and rationally — the perfect one-two punch for philanthropic storytelling.
The Results
A single night.
Two videos.
Hundreds of lives inspired.
The Next Step raised nearly $600,000 — the largest total in the organization’s history.
Even more meaningful?
With a record year, more lives can be impacted. And the client summed it up perfectly:
“Working with StoryTrack didn’t just help us raise money — it helped us tell the truth about what hope looks like.”
— Dary Glidewell, Board President, The Next Step
What We’ve Learned
Every nonprofit story has the potential to move people — but only if it’s told with purpose. Here’s what this project reinforced:
- Stories first, stats second. Lead with heart, close with proof.
- Your community is your content. The people you serve are your most powerful storytellers.
- Every video is a fundraiser. If emotion isn’t paired with a clear call to action, you’ve left impact on the table.
- Plan for longevity. A great gala film should also work on your website, in emails, and across social.
Why It Matters
In the nonprofit world, storytelling isn’t marketing — it’s mission delivery.
It’s how generosity begins.
At StoryTrack, we don’t just make videos. We help organizations translate purpose into performance, one story at a time. Here’s a few of our tips for effective non-profit video campaigns.
